The Vineyard Stairs

For years, the central staircase was only accessible to a limited extent, but it is of great importance for the accessibility of the vineyard terraces. The staircase was renovated in 2017 and was once again accessible without restrictions in time for documenta 14. For this purpose, the steps had to be taken up and partially replaced, and the leaking coverings of the landings had to be completely renewed. A complicating factor here was the retrofitting of the historic railings, which were too low and no longer stable. In order to preserve the historic appearance, a new handrail was therefore placed in front of the old, beautifully decorated railings. The careful and step-by-step continued redevelopment of the Weinberg site shows that historical and contemporary design elements can ideally complement each other, so that high-quality, new open spaces can be created. This was made possible by generous donations from Kassel's construction industry.

Just in time for the opening of documenta 14 in 2017, the new staircase in Murhardpark and the renovated fountain in Henschelgarten have been completed in the Weinberg area in Kassel. The new staircase in Murhardpark is located directly on Weinbergstraße, exactly opposite the main entrance to Grimmwelt, and provides direct access from the park into the exhibition house dedicated to the life and work of the Brothers Grimm. "With the staircase, there is now another attractive footpath connection from Grimmwelt through Murhardpark, which is characterized by old trees, in the direction of Brüder-Grimm-Platz and the city center," explains Kassel's city planning officer Christof Nolda.

The staircase, integrated into the slope with staggered natural stone steps, also features seating blocks that invite visitors to linger on the south-facing area. The access to Murhardpark further to the west, in the area between Grimmwelt and Museum für Sepulkralkultur, was paved with natural stone. This makes it easier for people with limited mobility to cross the sloping area. This measure was implemented at short notice in coordination with the Disabled Persons Advisory Council of the City of Kassel.
